We’re happy to welcome Rin to the TTG team as an artist who’ll be coloring the sprites for That’s the Way the Cookie Crumbles and and drawing the cast for Puella Magi Ibuki Magica! She’s also the artist for her own project, Kaguya-hime: The Moon Princess Tale. From the Story page:

The story is based on a Traditional Japanese’s fairy tale ‘Kaguya-hime’, also known at ‘The moon princess’ or ‘The shimmering princess’. According to some source, the story is “among the first – possibly the very first – text of any culture assuming the Moon to be an inhabited world and describing travel between it and the Earth.

You can visit her project website to learn more details! Continue reading »

I’ve been going through a lot of rewrites of the battle system for Ibuki Magica, trying to work out exactly what I want it to feel like, and to make something unique and matches the nature of the rest of the game. I figure I should give an update on where I’ve been and where I’m at now.

Originally, the new battle system was going to have 14 different skills, in seven sets of two. You’d choose an attack that selected one of those skill sets for the attacker, and another for the defender. Then there’d be some random number picked for each set and whoever had the higher number won or something confusing. I have simplified and streamlined it, and hopefully created something unique while not confusing the hell out of the players.

Every character has a set of three offensive ability scores, and three defensive ability scores. Each of these abilities reflects how a magical girl or witch can use their magical powers. Each offensive ability you use will rely on one of each of these: one offensive ability for the attacker, and a defensive ability for the target. The success of your attack will be affected by how much higher or lower your attack score is compared to your opponent’s defense score. Part of the strategy in combat will be working out which defensive abilities your enemies are worst at, and trying to use attacks that target those abilities. Of course, the attacks most likely to be successful might not be the most useful in a certain situation, so figuring out how to make your best abilities more likely to hit is important too.

In addition to the six abilities mentioned above, each character will have a set of traits that will affect different actions. These traits will reflect personality and fighting style more than they will raw fighting ability, and augment the power of certain attacks. For example, the courage trait would impact an attack that’s incredibly risky and daring, while the mindfulness trait might make it easier to analyze and defend against wild onslaughts. While a character’s ability scores will mostly be determined by the nature of their wish and how they fight, traits can be increased both by actions in battle and choices made outside of it.

I’m still working out a lot of this, like the exact number and type of traits, how the defensive abilities will work without overlapping (I want a good reason for why magical shields won’t protect you if you fail to dodge out of the way or something), and how to display different actions. Right now I have actions separated into ‘attacks’, ‘magic’, and ‘tactics’, but I’m not sure how accurate those are. I’m also still debating how to handle health, and protecting one’s soul gem. Thankfully, I’m a lot more satisfied with this current system is working overall compared to what I previously had. I hope to have another tech demo out soon for everyone to play with, and I hope you all look forward to it!

Gutsy wants a post for TWCC, so I’ll give her a post for TWCC. This post should really be Ryu’s, but last time I shanked talked to her, she said she was off vacationing with her family. Ergo, the responsibility falls upon me to announce the tentative color concepts for the TWCC cast! Remember that these are subject to change.

Edit: Post too long, put into break.

Sorry for being late with this! I got distracted last night. I’ll post the next one later tonight. For now, enjoy a character who totally isn’t a less abused version of Yuma.

Yoshie Eri, age 12

Background: Eri comes from a pretty wealthy family. Her father manages a branch of some large business, although Eri couldn’t tell you what the business actually does. She has two older brothers who are very protective and doting of her. Thanks to the large library in her home and her parents paying for private tutoring, she’s very well-read and intelligent for her age.

Personality: Eri is calm, polite, and mature for her age, although she’ll get annoyed if she’s treated like a kid. Despite being the youngest of three children, she seems to act like she’s the oldest. She enjoys being praised and pampered, although she won’t admit it. She’s very good about being morally pure, to the annoyance of those who don’t care about such things.

Appearance: Eri is still a growing girl. She has well-kept, braided light blue hair and ice-blue eyes that could almost penetrate your soul. Her clothes are always clean, unwrinkled, and ladylike. Eri’s Puella Magi uniform is primarily light blue, with white and dark blue as secondary colors. A few lace ribbons are wrapped around her waist, chest, and arms. Her weapon is an ivory dagger, but she primarily uses her magic to heal and protect.

CheeryMoya edit: WHERE ARE THE TURTLES?

I swear that if everyone doesn’t post pics of turtles by themselves…

I will flip over my own turtles D:<

4 of 10! Here’s another of our heroes. As is usual, this is a work in progress, and everything written here may be changed when I feel like it. (Especially appearance.) By the way, you may want to check out Minori’s post below if you haven’t lately. Curry has taken up making chibis as well, and she’s added the first pic of Minori ever drawn. By the way, the actual game won’t have chibis for sprites. Sorry.

Chibi Midori

Kiyomi Midori, age 14

Background: Midori spent her early years living in a small town with not much to do, spending time with her parents and father’s parents. When her grandparents passed away when she was 11, her parents decided they wanted to live in a more urban area, and moved. Midori was not happy about suddenly changing cities and living styles. She found the family apartment confining and the lack of fields and forests to run around in depressing. Eventually she managed to come with terms with her new life, although she takes whatever chance she can to go to the nearby arboretum.

Personality: Midori is always happy, cheery and carefree. She’s pretty chatty, and will love to gossip and tell stories. She’s always energetic without being high-strung. She likes to eat a lot, although she’s not much for actually cooking herself. Midori can play the flute extremely well. She thinks she can sing as well as she can play, but she’s the only one who considers herself to be anywhere close to good. She isn’t particularly good in school, has a tendency to be naive, and often doesn’t think things through. She’s pretty close to Minori, and likes teasing people when they mix their names up.

Appearance: Tall, slim and athletic. She has short, messy brown hair with subtle streaks of red. There’s always a smile under her dark green eyes, and her posture and gestures match her energy and optimism. As a Puella Magi, Midori wears a light green dress with dark green, brown, and pink trim and designs, as if her dress was to make her look as much like a flowering tree as tastefully possible. She wields a crossbow that appears to have been meticulously carved from expensive wood. Midori doesn’t need to load it physically, she can will a bolt to appear loaded.

I was going to take a picture of this wooden turtle I have, but my laptop’s camera is not cooperating.

CheeryMoya edit: *sigh*

Moar edit: Did a chibi for Midori on January 27.

Here’s the third of ten Ibuki Magica characters. This one is the mentor character. I’m trying to keep her interesting and not too much like a certain other mentor, without also trying too hard to make her different. All these characters are still under development, and since Ibuki and Ichiko were the only two girls to already have art drawn of them, the appearance of the rest of the characters is not settled at all. It also means that there won’t be a chibi from Moya this time.

Hotaru Minori, age 19

Background: Minori is the oldest Puella Magi anyone in the city has known (both in actual age and time since making her contract), and the only one who has managed to make more than one wish. She was approached to be contracted about a year ago, before she even knew of anything of witches or magical girls. Despite not knowing what she’s getting into, Minori took the offer and began her life as a witchslayer. She’s taken it upon herself to act as a mentor to any new recruit who wants her guidance, and is happy to keep them on the right path.

Personality: She likes acting like a big sister, although while Ichiko acts like a responsible sister, Minori is the loud, overexcited, and disorganized sister who would totally be cool with you sneaking off to your boyfriend’s house. Minori’s easygoing as a mentor, but she will get disappointed if her charges ignore what she says. She has a tendency to quickly disbelieve any new information that doesn’t fit what she already understands.

Appearance: Minori has soft red eyes and jet black hair that is cut to just below her neck. Since she’s not in school, she enjoys the chance to wear a variety of clothes, although they tend to just be shirts and shorts. She’s tall and well-toned, but she doesn’t particularly try to keep her figure or impress anyone with it. Her magical girl uniform is a white minidress with red trim, and both her arms and legs are in white tights. Uniquely, Minori’s hair will grow down past her hips, with the new hair being a bright red. Minori wields a heavy sword with one hand, with the grace of a fencer.

Curry edit: Are we drawing chibis now? I want in!she has the coolest hair

CheeryMoya edit: Because a certain someone refuses to acknowledge the fact that all posts need at least one pretty picture or a turtle, I’m going to share with you all 3 of my prized possessions.  Behold, a turtle doll, a figurine of Dragon Kid from Tiger and Bunny, and a hand-knit scarf that I made to resemble bacon. I know you are all filling up with envy as you stare at my wonderful things.

This is the second of ten posts for the main characters of this goofy little fangame. This time we have the protagonist’s closest friend.

WIP Chibi Ichiko

Naoki Ichiko, age 15

Background: Only a few months older than Ibuki, but that’s enough for Ichiko to see Ibuki as a younger sister. Ichiko was old enough to form memories of meeting Ibuki, although they’re vague and uncollected. Like Ibuki, she’s had a plain and normal life so far. Unlike Ibuki, she’s ended up taking on more responsibilities and tasks, including helping to run  her school’s student council. She and Ibuki have drifted away a bit, but Ichiko still sees her as her best friend and surrogate sibling.

Personality: A diligent and focused worker, willing to do anything that needs to be done. She’s charismatic and popular, and can take charge of a crowd pretty easily. Ichiko always tries to do what she thinks is the right thing to do, even if it means ignoring some of her friends. She’s also known for her high test scores and her athletic ability, although she doesn’t really act competitive with them. A lot of people consider her to be as perfect as a high school girl can be.

Appearance: A bit taller than Ibuki, but still not particularly impressive in height. She has long, flowing hair that’s slightly lighter than auburn, and large, warm brown eyes to match. She has a wide smile and seems to pose naturally in any situation, which likely helps her get so much attention.

-waits for Moya to add a turtle pic-

CheeryMoya edit: Thou prayers have been answered, but not without a bit of RRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGEEEEEE.  Also another chibi; there won’t be any more after this since I have not made chibis for all the girls.

Don’t ask what they’re doing; I don’t know either.

Celebratory Sea Turtle

Shut up, this never gets old.

That’s right, we have an idea of when we want to release a demo for you guys! It’ll have the basic baking sim part done, and hopefully sprites plus a week’s worth of dialogue if Ryu and I can get it in on time! When will it be out you say? *drumroll*March 31 is what we’ve all decided on, so stick around!

And while you all wait patiently, I’ve got a few badly made chibis of your favorite bishies after the break! Continue reading »

There. I managed to kick myself into working on this game and doing stuff. Witches finally attack, making this finally count as an actual game-like thing. It’s horribly unbalanced, and it’s hard for witches to actually kill you unless you try to make them. (hint) But it’s something to work with. Since it’s possible to lose, I’ve added some stuff with unconsciousness and reactions to losing, although you might not find them >_> At least now that I have some kind of basis for enemy AI, I have the core of this battle system done. Now I’m going to mess around with it, polish it, and learn from it so that when it’s ready to be added to the real game, it will be as awesome as I can make it.

Available for all good OSes (except Haiku, sorry) here.

Plans for next week’s release (and yes, there will be one next week):

  • Move the code to Ren’Py 6.13.7. No copypasting, I’m typing it up from scratch using my current code as reference.
  • Balance the stats, with considerations to how stats will be affected by leveling in the proper game.
  • Add and rework actions. (The “Protect” option has been doing nothing for months, I should get on that.)
  • Have some actual script done.

CheeryMoya edit: The day shall come when I no longer have to edit every post and put a turtle in it. In other news…

Aww… that’s cute- wait, what the…

IT KEEPS HAPPENING D:
